Staley was a four-year letterman in football and wrestling. He was a three-year starter in football, twice earning First-Team All-NWC honors at center. He also played linebacker in the days of single platoon football. In wrestling, he won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate 177-pound wrestling title in 1956, finished second in 1955, and third in 1957. He competed in the NCAA National tournament as a senior.
