In two years of intercollegiate wrestling, he was defeated only once—that match for the national championship his freshman year; as a sophomore, he was undefeated in 29 matches and went on to win the NAIA national heavyweight championship; in the national tournament, he gave up only  two points while winning five matches; a shoulder injury at the start of his junior year ended the career of the two-time all-American.
