After graduating from Lewis & Clark in 1976, Goe spent 43 years working as a sports reporter for The Oregonian. While he covered a wide array of sports during his tenure, Goe focused on track & field and college football. He covered the Olympics for The Oregonian in 2008 (Beijing), 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio De Janiero), multiple Rose Bowls, Final Fours and NCAA Football Championships.

He won the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Best Sports Feature Story in 2000 for his article on the 25th anniversary of Steve Prefontaine’s death. In 2020, Goe was named the Oregon Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. He also was named the National Track Writer of the Year in 2014 and twice was recognized as Top 10 for investigative reporting by the national chapter of Associated Press Sports Editors Association for stories about the firing of Benson High School boys basketball coach Dick Gray in 1986, and the University of Oregon’s Freedom Bowl expenses in 1990.
