As a four-year letter winner in baseball, Jim helped the Pioneers to a Northwest Conference Baseball Championship in 1967. A three-time Northwest Conference First-Team and NAIA District II honoree, he was named the Pete Ward Most Valuable Player during his junior season. He was the team leader in batting average his freshman, sophomore, and senior seasons, finishing with a .361, .392, and .352 average respectively.
