Boutin was a three-time All-American basketball player who averaged 20.1 points and 13.1 rebounds over 107 career games, setting the all-time Pioneer scoring record. he was Third-Team as a sophomore and First-Team as a junior and senior, named First-Team AP Little All-American in 1964, and was a three-time First-Team All-NWC. He also set a NWC record in the javelin in 1964 at 219 feet and was a member of three conference championship basketball and track & field teams.
