A world and national champion, Pablo Arizmendi-Kalb excelled in the sport of taekwondo throughout his life. Over a career that spanned the 1970s and 1980s, he won six gold medals and four silver medals in four different weight classes including a win at the 1983 U.S. national championship while he was a junior at Lewis & Clark. Prior to that, he won a gold medal at the 1978 Pan American Championship and a silver medal at the 1979 World Championship. He competed in championship tournaments in Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Germany and throughout the United States.
Arizmendi-Kalb learned of Lewis & Clark through a connection with Tae-hong Choi, a grandmaster in taekwondo, winner of multiple martial arts titles and a teacher of thousands of students in the Portland area. He was encouraged to visit Oregon and ultimately fell in love with the college.
