The 1961-62 men's basketball team was the first in any sport at Lewis & Clark to earn a berth and record a win in a national championship tournament. Winner of both the Northwest Conference and NAIA District 2 titles, the Jim Goddard-coached Pioneers defeated Fort Hays State of Kansas in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, the first of three consecutive appearances at nationals. Over that span, the Pios went 63-24. A member of both the Lewis & Clark Hall of Fame and Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, Jim Boutin had 30 points and 19 rebounds in the win over Fort Hays State, which earned him the first of three straight All-America team selections.
