A four-year letterman in track & field and basketball, Boutin was a two-time All- American in track, finishing fifth in 1956 and sixth in 1957 at the NAIA National javelin competition. He set the L&C javelin record and won the NWC championship in that event in 1956 and 1957. As a three-year starter in basketball, Boutin averaged 7.8 points in 102 games and also played quarterback on the football team on year.
