An outstanding football and track & field athlete at Albany College; a fullback and tackle on teams of 1925 to 1930, he was one of the biggest  and fastest collegiate players in the Pacific Northwest; in track, undefeated in four years in the high and low hurdles in track while also competing in the javelin, discus, high jump and long  jump; in a 1931 meet, he outscored  the entire Linfield team, then the reigning Willamette Valley Conference champions.
