Coached by Tom Smythe, the Pioneers were ranked in the top-25 nationally by the third week of the season. The team finished the season 1989 campaign as the first L&C team in 20 years to win the Northwest Conference Regular Season Championship and go onto win the NWC Championships. The teams put up stellar numbers, averaging 467 yards a game, while ranking third all-time in the L&C record books in passing yards with 255. The team is also ranked second all-time in offensive yards, totaling 5,069 on the season and 566 offensive yards per game. The team put up 389 points on the season, averaging 43.2 per game.
