PORTLAND, Ore. – Women's basketball tipped off conference play Friday night against the Whitworth Pirates (3-2, 1-0 NWC). Both teams shot well making for a tight game but Lewis & Clark couldn't quite get the shots they needed falling 79-76.
The game was tight at halftime as the Pioneers trailed the Pirates 37-35. Lewis & Clark came out in the second half looking to find their stride and took the lead 62-61 with 5:33 left on the clock. But Whitworth answered back extending their lead to as much as ten points after a 14-3 run. The Pioneers looked like they might have a comeback in store but fell just short 79-76.
Whitworth was led by Lauren Picha with 16 points and five rebounds while Kayla Johnson was just behind her with 15 points and four rebounds. Taylor (LaMoreaux) Taylor, a former Pioneer, pitched in with 14 points in the game. The Pirates shot 50% from three point land and 51% from the field.
The Pioneers were led by Kristina Williams with 23 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Christina Herring had 14 points while Margaret Dowling had 11 points and 12 rebounds on the night. Lewis & Clark shot 48% from the field, matched Whitworth at 50% from behind the arc and outrebounded the Pirates 48-31.
The next game for the Pioneers is Saturday Dec. 4th in Pamplin Sports Center at 4pm where they host the Whitman Missionaries.
