Early Control, Late Push Not Enough for Women’s Basketball Against Loggers

Sophomore Kaitlen Carns delivered career-high 25 points, including late fourth-quarter surge.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College women's basketball set the tone early and held the lead through much of the opening half, before Puget Sound took control after intermission in a 73-66 decision Saturday afternoon at Pamplin Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Sophomore Kaitlen Carns led Lewis & Clark with a career-high 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. She went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
 
First-year Hailey Perez added 16 points, while first-year Lilly Jordan finished with seven points, three rebounds and one assist.
 
Carns scored the game's first basket with a driving layup just over a minute into the contest. The teams traded baskets through the opening quarter, with Lewis & Clark holding leads of 8-6 and 10-8 in the middle minutes. Carns extended the margin to 14-8 with a layup at the 1:52 mark, but Puget Sound closed the period on a 4-0 run to pull within 14-12 after one quarter.
 
Lewis & Clark pushed its lead to 22-20 on a Jordan jumper at 5:47 of the second quarter. The River Otters followed with a 10-2 run to take a 32-24 advantage with 2:08 remaining before halftime. Puget Sound responded by closing the half on a 6-0 run, capped by a Hailey Quiggle three-pointer with 28 seconds left. Junior DJ Kendrick made one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining, then forced a Puget Sound turnover at the buzzer as Lewis & Clark carried a 33-30 lead into the break.
 
Puget Sound took control in the third quarter, outscoring Lewis & Clark 20-14. Carmen Cruz scored 10 points in the period for the Loggers, including a three-pointer that extended the lead to 48-41. Perez converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds to bring Lewis & Clark within 50-47 entering the fourth quarter.
 
Lewis & Clark opened the fourth quarter with a Divinity Singleton basket to make it 50-49. Carns tied the game at 55-all with a three-pointer at the 6:31 mark. Puget Sound answered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, led by five points from Mele Sake and a three-pointer from Natalia Sefair-Lopez, to take a 63-55 lead with 4:26 remaining.
 
Carns scored seven straight points for Lewis & Clark, including another three-pointer, to cut the deficit to 63-62 with 2:37 left. Paige Oh responded with a three-pointer for Puget Sound, and the Loggers sealed the win at the free-throw line down the stretch.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Carns scored 12 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 3-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
  • Junior Divinity Singleton finished with four points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
  • Kendrick recorded a team-high four steals and added two rebounds.
  • Lewis & Clark out rebounded Puget Sound 37-35 and held a 28-24 edge in points in the paint.
  • First-years Ky Roussin (five points, six rebounds) and Ali McCauley (four points, three rebounds), along with junior Kaela Guidry (two points, three rebounds), rounded out the scoring.
