PORTLAND, Ore.—Whitworth University jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held off Lewis & Clark College women's basketball's late charge, to earn a 67-62 win on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pirates used a hot start and a season-best day from beyond the 3-point line, to deny Lewis & Clark a Northwest Conference weekend sweep.
Junior
Lauryn Frederickson led the River Otters with 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Frederickson went 6-16 from the field and hit all six of her free throws.
Sophomore
Kaitlen Carns tacked on 13 points on 5-8 shooting. She chipped in three rebounds and two steals.
First year
Ky Roussin put together the best game of her collegiate career. Roussin stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds in 23 minutes of action off the bench.
Whitworth's Ashlyn Peterson led all players with 23 points. Peterson knocked down four 3-pointers (4-7) and helped lead Whitworth to their best 3-point shooting game since 2023. The Pirates finished 11-18 (61.1 percent) from beyond the arc with three players knocking down multiple threes.
Addyson Gallatin (14) and CC Size (11) each joined Peterson in double-figures.
Whitworth raced out to a 12-0 advantage after the opening 5:04. The Pirates hit each of their first four shots and five of their first six.
First year
Hailey Perez snapped the Whitworth scoring streak with a free throw but the visitors countered with a 3-pointer to extend their lead to 15-1. Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to 21-9 after the first quarter and reduced the deficit to single digits early in the second quarter.
Divinity Singleton and Roussin recorded back-to-back layups to start the quarter and Roussin added a free throw to shave the deficit to 21-14.
Whitworth would stretch their lead back 13 but Lewis & Clark would cut the deficit back to seven (31-24) at the break.
Lewis & Clark would get within five points twice in the third quarter but Whitworth finished the quarter with a 47-38 lead.
The River Otters cut the deficit to one possession with 1:25 to play. After trailing 60-51 with 3:42 left, Lewis & Clark used a 6-0 run to get back within three. Junior
DJ Kendrick knocked down a pair of free throws and then hit a layup. On the next possession, Kendrick came up with a steal and Roussin hit a layup to bring Lewis & Clark within three points (60-57) for the first time since it was 2-0.
Ashlyn Nielsen answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play for Whitworth and the Pirates hit all five of their free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Whitworth hit a season-high 11 3-pointers and posted their best 3-point field goal percentage in a contest this year by over 20 percent (61.1). On the flip side, Lewis & Clark hit a season-low three 3-pointers and shot a season-worst 12.5 percent (3-24) from deep.
- Roussin posted career-highs in points (seven), steals (six), assists (five) and minutes played (23).
- Frederickson went over 550 career rebounds (551) on Saturday. She sits 13th in program history in career rebounds.
- Lewis & Clark finished the contest with a 28-12 lead in points in the paint and 20-9 edge in points off turnovers.
WHO'S NEXT
Lewis & Clark will travel to take on Willamette University on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. The trip to Salem will be the team's lone road trip in the midst of seven home games.
