Pioneers fall to Pirates in nail-biter finish

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Peyton Romo's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left nearly gave the Lewis & Clark Pioneers a one-point lead in Friday's 60-57 loss to the Whitworth Pirates at Pamplin Sports Center.

After Romo made a three to bring the Pios within two with 43 seconds left, her go-ahead effort was just short. Whitworth made one free throw before Romo took one more shot at the buzzer that missed. 

There were 16 lead changes and 12 ties in the game. The Pioneers took a season-high 29 3-point attempts and made eight. Delsie Johnson was in double figures again with a team-high 13 points, while Hannah Martin added five points and 10 rebounds. Romo finished with eight.

Key Moments

With 3:30 left in the third quarter, Whitworth took the largest lead of the game to that point, 40-32, when Sydney Abbott scored two of her game-high 24 points. She had 17 in the second half.

Lewis & Clark outscored the Pirates 9-3 over the next three minutes to close to within two entering the fourth quarter. Martin scored a jumper, Romo had a pair of free throws and Laurel Marchant hit another jumper during the stretch. Marchant finished with 10 points on 4 of 12 shooting, a career high for attempts. 

Whitworth opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run and eventually pushed the lead to 11. The Pirates made 15 of 21 free throws on a night when they nearly shot their worst on the year from 3-point range (3 for 15). Whitworth (11-9, 4-7 NWC) entered the game second in the Northwest Conference for 3-point shooting.

The Pirates outgained the Pioneers 34-14 in points in the paint.
