FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Making just 2 of 12 shots in the third quarter, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers saw a three-point halftime lead evaporate on the way to a 64-53 defeat against the Pacific Boxers on Friday night at Stoller Center.
The game was the Pios' fourth straight on the road, a stretch in which Lewis & Clark finished 1-3. Including Friday's game, the Pioneers have now lost seven games this season after leading at halftime.
A 16-9 first quarter helped Lewis & Clark to a 26-23 advantage after the opening half. Junior Ayisat Afolabi had six points and six rebounds in the first half, but she was held to no points in the second half. She finished with eight rebounds in the game, tied for the game high.
Senior Kaitlin Mathewson and freshman Alyx Crager scored 12 points apiece. Mathewson's double-digit scoring performance is her second straight after scoring six or fewer in the three prior games.
Sarah Curl led all scorers, pacing the Boxers with 18 points on 8 of 20 shooting. Karli McHone and Kyla Siri were also in double figures, scoring 17 and 12, respectively.
In the third quarter, Pacific (8-8; 3-4 Northwest Conference) scored the period's first 11 points, including four apiece from Curl and Siri. Crager finally put Lewis & Clark on the scoresheet with a 3-pointer with just over three minutes remaining. She shot 2 of 6 from beyond the arc for the game. A layup by Mathewson with 59 seconds left made the two scores the only points by the Pios in the quarter, giving Pacific a 40-31 edge entering the final 10 minutes.
Other than Sara Hogman's 3-pointer at the 4:09 mark of the fourth quarter, only Crager and Mathewson scored in the first 8:30 of the final period. Crager's layup with 3:26 left brought the Pios within four, 51-47, before the Boxers made 15 of 19 free throws to protect the win.
Pacific capitalized on 20 Lewis & Clark turnovers, which led to 18 Boxers points, with the Pios limited to 11 points off 15 Pacific giveaways. The Pioneers held a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint, outrebounding Pacific 33-29. The Boxers outshot Lewis & Clark 45 to 40 percent for the game, including a 63-17 percent edge in the third quarter.
Lewis & Clark (2-14; 1-6 NWC) returns to Pamplin Sports Center on Saturday afternoon for the first time since Jan. 8. The Pioneers will host Willamette at 4 p.m. This season, Lewis & Clark is 0-4 at home.
