Leith Leads Women's Basketball to Overtime Victory

Box Score

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Freshman Miyah Leith led the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team with 11 points in the Pioneers 57-55 overtime victory at Pacific on Friday night.

The Pioneers move to 4-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Northwest Conference. The Boxers fall to 6-6 overall, while dropping their first conference game of the season (2-1).

Leith finished the night 5-of-6 from the floor, including a perfect 1-for-1 from behind the three point arc. The freshman guard also chipped in five rebounds, two assists and a block in the win. Senior Casey Zinn came off the bench to score 10 points for the Pioneers, while pulling down seven boards. Sophomore Ayisat Afolabi led all players with a game-high 16 rebounds, 12 of which came on the defensive end. Afolabi also netted nine points for Lewis & Clark. Junior Sarah Anderson took the ball away from the Boxers a game-high three times.

Abby Jones and Nani Ostrom each netted a game-high 13 points for the Boxers, while teammate Olivia Cook collected a team-high 12 boards.

Pacific jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead in the first half with a Kalia Johnson three-pointer capping off the drive at the 16:59 mark. Junior Izzy Campbell finally put the Pioneers on the board with 16:28 to play with a three assisted by Anderson.

Leith knotted the contest at 11-11 five minutes later courtesy of a layup after a Pioneer take away. The freshman then handed her team their first lead of the contest moments later with yet another layup, this time after a blocked Boxer shot, resulting in a Pioneer defensive board.

After that the two teams would trade possession of the lead until the end of the half. A Sarah Curl three gave the Boxers a three point advantage as both teams headed to the locker room with the Pios trailing 29-26.

Zinn earned the lead back for Lewis & Clark 11:53 into the second half with a layup of her own, this one assisted by Cianna Ochoco. The basket would spark an 8-2 run by the Pioneers, earning them their largest lead of the contest with 8:05 remaining in regulation.

Pacific found a way to cut the deficit with an 8-0 run that tied the game at 48-48 with 2:47 on the clock. Neither team would hold more than a two point lead the rest of the way, with Curl once again coming up big at the end of the half, this time with a jumper that tied the game at 51 all.

Ostrom put the Boxers on top in overtime with a quick three pointer. A layup by Afolabi and a three by Kaitlin Mathewson earned the lead back for Lewis & Clark with 1:19 left in the extra period. Ochoco put the Pioneers ahead by two points after hitting one of her two free-throws with 13 seconds left. The lead would prove to be enough as the Boxers were unable to drain their final chance of the game.

Lewis & Clark returns home for its next contest hosting Pacific Lutheran at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10.
