Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore Ayisat Afolabi came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points for the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team on Saturday night, but it was not enough to lift the Pioneers past the visiting Whitworth Pirates who won the game 52-35.
The Pioneers fall to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in Northwest Conference action. The #17 Pirates remain unbeaten, improving to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC.
Afolabi, who was the only player to pick up a double-double, also collected a team-high 10 rebounds for the Pioneers. The sophomore was 7-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Freshman Lauren Wood also ended the night in double-figures in scoring with 10 points, while pulling down seven boards. Both Wood and Afolabi led all players with three steals.
Katara Belton-Sharp led the Pirates with 16 points, while teammate KC McConnell netted 15 in the win. Jessica Kramer collected a game-high 11 rebounds for Whitworth.
The Pirates came out determined to pick up the win and remain unbeated, cruising to an early 7-0 lead with 16:57 on the clock. Wood finally put the Pioneers on the board a minute and a half later with a jumper assisted by Afolabi. Whitworth, who never trailed in the contest, increased its lead to 19 right before the half on back-to-back free-throws by Jessica Thoens.
Lewis & Clark's Izzy Campbell hit the first basket of the second half making it a 33-16 contest. Consecutive Afolabi free-throws at the 8:06 mark cut the Pioneer deficit to nine points, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Jan. 9 for their first road conference game of the season. The Pios will face-off with Pacific at 6 p.m.
