PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore Kaitlin Mathewson drained a game winning three pointer with seconds left in the Lewis & Clark women's basketball teams 81-78 overtime win against Concordia (Ore.). Senior Tayler Wang led all players with 30 points en route to her third double-double of the season.
So far this season, Wang has scored in double figures in five of the Pioneers six games, this time ending the night with a career-high 30 points. Wang also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. The senior guard was nearly perfect from the free-throw line, hitting 10-of-11, while shooting 50.0% from the floor.
Freshman Ayisat Afolabi came off the bench to score 13 points in the Pioneer win, while Katie Anderson chipped in 12 points. Senior Daron Dean collected nine rebounds for the Pios, while Afolabi pulled down eight.
The Cavaliers had three players finish in double figures with Caitlyn McCutcheon leading the way with 22 points. McCutcheon led all players with a game-high 19 rebounds, while McKenna Daly collected 13.
The Pioneers owned the opening 18+ minutes of the first half, starting off the contest on an impressive 14-2 run. Lewis & Clark steadily ran up a 34-22 advantage on a Wang three with 2:56 until halftime.
The momentum shifted in Concordia's favor in the closing minutes of the first period, with the Cavaliers ending the half on a 6-0 run, making it a 34-30 game at the intermission.
It would take Lewis & Clark five and a half minutes to score its first basket of the second half. By that time the Cavaliers had taken their first lead of the game. Anderson ended the Pioneers scoring drought with 14:36 on the clock courtesy of an unassisted layup.
Mathewson followed up the Anderson shot with a layup that tied the game at 38. The two sides battled back and fourth over the remainder of the half with neither team able to pull significantly ahead. Trailing 61-59 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation the Pioneers received some help from the Cavs with an untimely foul. The foul sent Dean to the charity stripe where she nailed both shots to tie the game, subsequently sending the game into overtime.
Concordia quickly took the advantage in the first overtime period, racking up a 65-61 lead with a little over three minutes remaining. The Pioneers trailed the entire overtime period until a Wang layup with 40 seconds remaining made it a 69-69 contest. Both teams earned one final shot at the basket but neither was able to hit their shots, sending the game into double overtime.
The final overtime period started off like the first with Concordia earning the early edge. Lewis & Clark again trailed the majority of the overtime. Down 78-76, Afolabi sank back-to-back free-throws, knotting the game at 78. With just seven seconds left in the second overtime, Mathewson pulled up from the left side of the court, draining the game winning three pointer.
