WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team earned a 64-54 victory over Whitman on Saturday night to sweep its Northwest Conference road series.
With the win the Pioneers improve to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Missionaries fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in NWC action.
Kristina Williams once again led the Pioneers in points, netting a season-high 26 points against the Missionaries, while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Sara Villanueva finished the night with 14 points, while Megan Spence contributed 11 points and seven boards.
Kelly Peterson led the Missionaries with 14 points, while Mary Madden and Sarah Anderegg each scored eight.
It took the Pioneers a while to get going in the first half, trailing the Missionaries 21-10 with 5:25 left in the period. Free-throws late in the half allowed the Pioneers to rally late to narrow the deficit to 25-22 heading into the locker room.
A 7-0 run with baskets from Williams, Villanueva and Spence in the opening minute of the first half gave the Pioneers a 29-25 advantage. The Lewis & Clark lead would stick as the Pioneers would not allow the Missionaries within more than a point with 16:33 remaining.
Free-throws by Tayler Wang with a little over 13 minutes remaining earned the Pioneers an eight point, 42-34 advantage. Jenele Peterson pulled the Missionaries within three points with 3:10 remaining after laying one in.
Solid free-throw shooting down the stretch by both Williams and Villanueva helped the Pioneers rack up a considerable lead. Villanueva earned the Pios a 64-54 lead with 17 seconds remaining after hitting back-to-back free-throws.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. hosting Warner Pacific.
