PORTLAND, Ore. – Friday night's
action started off with a field re-dedication to Fred Wilson, who
was on hand. Wilson spent 20 years as head football coach at Lewis
& Clark. He also coached baseball, wrestling, and golf as well
as serving as director of athletics and a professor at the college.
He is a five time inductee to Lewis & Clarks' Hall Of
Fame; once as an individual (1980), twice as a member of an
inducted team (1993, 2001), once as an assistant coach (1995), and
once as a head coach (2006). Wilson graduated from Lewis &
Clark in 1951. He began teaching and coaching at Lewis & Clark
in 1956 and retired in 1987. The field was originally dedicated to
him in 2006.
Women's soccer (1-0-1) then went up against the Northwest
University Eagles(0-0-2) at Griswold Stadium in their second home
game of the season. Once again the game ended up going into double
overtime, this time ending in a 1-1 tie.
The game started off slow as both defenses dominated the first
half of play. Only seven shots were taken between the two teams
with Lewis & Clark's Austyn Byassee coming closest on a
header that hit the post late in the first half. Byassee had
another great chance minutes earlier but a nice save by Northwest
goalkeeeper Jessica Kane held the game scoreless.
The second half rolled around and action came our way as Katie
Browning missed just wide right in the early minutes. Then in the
58th minute Natalie Levy found the back of the net on a ball that
was tipped around in the middle of the field. The goal is
Levy's first of the season and first in her collegiate
career.
The Eagles answered right back, in the 61st minute with a well
placed shot by Kelsey Frasier from 25 yards out. The ball tipped
Goalkeeper Shayna Lentz's outstretched hand, hit the
crossbar, and found net.
At the end of regulation the game was still tied at one.
Northwest University outshot the Pioneers 6-1 in the two overtime
periods but Lentz held strong and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Lentz had six saves on the night while Northwest goalkeeper Kane
had three. Northwest outshot Lewis & Clark 16 to 10 and had
more shots on goal, seven as opposed to the Pioneer's three.
Levy led the Pios in shots (4) and shots on goal (3) while the
Eagles were led by Frasier with three shots, all of which were on
goal.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday Sept. 7 at Evergreen
College at 4:00pm.
