PORTLAND, Ore. – Women's soccer took on
the Willamette University Bearcats (2-5, 1-2 NWC) on Saturday. For
head coach Jim Tursi it is the first time he has coached against
Willamette, where he coached for 15 years before coming to Lewis
& Clark. The Pioneers couldn't quite pull out a victory as they
lost 2-1 on a shot in the 89th minute by Sabine Wetzel.
In the Early going Willamette had a chance to score on a nice
ball to Wetzel who hit the cross bar with a powerful shot. Then
came the offense for the pioneers. In the 25th minute of the first
half, Natalie
Levy scored on a beautifully placed ball that found its way
over the outstretched arm of Bearcat Goalkeeper Kelli Gano. Katie
Browning assisted on the goal.
The Pioneer goal was followed by a couple good shots by
Willamette. The first came off the foot of Stephanie Skelly that
forced Pio Goalkeeper Shayna Lentz to make
a diving save. Then with three minutes left in the first half, the
Bearcats took advantage of a Pioneer foul. On the free kick, Kelly
Moore found the back of the net on a great 20 yard shot that nicked
the tips of Lentz's fingers on the way into the goal.
Both teams had chances to score in the second half. The
Pioneer's best chance came from a solid free kick by Emilia Emmetti
which ended up missing by no more than a foot above the goal. The
game stayed tied through halftime and into the 89th minute when a
frenzy of action took place. The Bearcat's Wetzel found herself
with a rebound off of a shot that hit the left post. Wetzel then
took a quick shot while Lentz was still recovering, scoring what
would be the game winning goal.
The Bearcats outshot the Pioneers 17-10 and the Pioneers had six
shots on goal as opposed to Willamette's five. Lentz had three
saves on the day and Gano had five. Levy lead the pioneers in shots
with four and Ariel Wilson led the Bearcats with four as well.
Lewis & Clark returns to action tomorrow Sunday Sept. 26th
at Linfield College starting at noon.
