PORTLAND, Ore. - The Jim Tursi era
of women's soccer at Lewis & Clark began Wednesday night
at Griswold Stadium. The Pioneers started their season with a 1-0
double overtime victory against the visiting Warner Pacific
Knights.
The winning goal came off the foot of freshman Emilia
Emmetti on a penalty kick in the fifth minute of the second
overtime. It is her first collegiate goal and the first win of the
season for the Pios.
In the first period the Pioneers came out playing great defense
while trying to find some rhythm on the offensive side of the ball.
Natalie Levy, Katie
Browning, and Lexi Bolton provided some solid shots, barely
missing on several occasions. Elise
Delgado continued where she left off last season, in
net, by holding the Knights scoreless through the first 45
minutes of the game.
The second half was filled with opportunities for Lewis &
Clark but nothing could find the back of the net. Freshman Shayna
Lentz subbed in at goalkeeper for Delgado and would stay for
the rest of the night. At the end of regulation the score was still
tied at zero. The first overtime provided Lewis & Clark with
their best opportunity of the night on a Browning penalty kick. The
penalty kick attempt, however, was saved by Warner Pacific
goalkeeper Nikita Rivera.
In the second OT the Pioneers did get the shot they had needed.
Emmetti ended the night on another penalty shot opportunity,
bringing the Pioneers a victory. Lentz received the win and had two
saves on the night. Lewis & Clark outshot the Knights 20-6 and
put seven shots on goal as opposed to the Knight's three.
The Pioneers return to action Friday, Sept. 3 as they take on
the visiting Northwest University Eagles at 7:00pm in Griswold
Stadium.
