PORTLAND, Ore. – Women's basketball faced off against conference opponent Whitman College Missionaries (4-2, 1-1 NWC) on Saturday. Lewis & Clark (4-3, 1-1 NWC) had a nine point lead but with two minutes left the game was tied. The Pioneers' Sara Villanueva and Kristina Williams put the game out of reach however, with clutch shots and free throws in the final minutes giving the Pioneers a 62-55 victory.
Both teams came out fast, shooting 50% from beyond the arc in the first half. With just over two minutes left in the half, Whitman took a five point lead. As the game neared halftime however, Lewis & Clark narrowed the lead and at the half the game was tied 30-30. The Pioneer's Megan Spence had nine points in the first half while Whitman's Kelly Peterson led her team with 11.
The second half started and Lewis & Clark came out strong building a 9 point lead with 7:35 left on the clock. Whitman then closed the gap with a 10-3 run making it a two point, 52-50 Pioneer lead. A few minutes later, Jennifer Keyes tied the game for the Missionaries on a big three point shot. With 1:21 left in the game Williams was fouled after an important steal and made both of her free throws to make it a 57-55 for Lewis & Clark. Seconds later Villanueva put the game out of reach scoring a clutch layup and hitting two free throws to give the Pioneers a 62-55 victory.
Whitman was led by Keyes with 16 points and six rebounds. K. Peterson pitched in another 15 points while Jenele Peterson added 13 points in the game. The Pioneers were led Williams with 15 points. Spence had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Margaret Dowling led the team in rebounds grabbing 11. Christina Herring helped out with seven points, six rebounds, and nine assists while Freshman Tayler wang scored 10, coming off the bench.
The Next game for the Pioneers is December 19th in Menlo California where they play in the Menlo Classic.
