PORTLAND, Ore. – Women's soccer celebrated their five seniors' careers and faced off against a tough Whitworth University team on Saturday. Lewis & Clark made it a game however with a goal from Katrina Weisbecker late in the second half putting the score at 2-1. Whitworth then answered with two quick goals to win the game 4-1.
The first half was dominated by the Pirates as the ball stayed mainly on the Pioneer side of the field. In the 20th minute Whitworth took advantage of a corner kick that Anisa Babar headed to her teammate Cory Druffel who then headed the ball off the cross bar and into the back of the net. 12 minutes later MacKenzie Grow found a loose ball in the middle of the field and placed a ball into the right corner past Pioneer goalkeeper Shayna Lentz.
The game stayed 2-0 through half time and through most of the second half. In the 83rd minute Natalie Levy found Weisbecker who stutter-stepped and then ran past a Whitworth defender down the field and beat Pirate goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom. With the score now 2-1 the Pioneers looked to have the momentum but Whitworth answered back. Two minutes later Sarah Berentson found some room on the right side and then crossed a ball to Allie Smith who headed the ball into the back of the net. Smith was not finished. Four minutes later Smith received a pass in traffic from Elizabeth Mattila and tapped the ball in from only a few yards out. The two late goals ended the game as the Pirates went on to win 4-1.
Whitworth outshot Lewis & Clark 27-3 and 15-2 in shots on goal. The Pirates were led by Molly Moore with four shots but Smith led the Pirates in shots on goal with three. Aly Robinson and Weisbecker both took one shot and one shot on goal to lead the Pioneers. Lexi Bolton also chipped in with a shot in the game. The Pirates' Bergstrom received the win and had to save only one ball while allowing one goal. Lentz on the other hand had a busy day in goal for the Pioneers, recording 11 saves.
The Pioneers' loss concludes the 2010 women's soccer season. Good luck to our seniors Katie Browning Stella Gilliland, Annie Hancock, Catherine Kitts, and Aly Robinson as they graduate and focus on their future endeavors. Congratulations on great college soccer careers, you will all be missed on the field next season.
