PORTLAND, Ore. – After a tough loss on
homecoming, women's soccer once again stumbled to a 4-1 loss
against the Pacific University Boxers (4-5-1, 4-2 NWC). The Boxers'
Jenny Novak scored two goals on the day while Cat
Kitts scored the lone goal for Lewis & Clark (2-6-2, 0-6
NWC).
The game match started out slow for both teams. The Pioneers and
the boxers had a few good chances in the first 15 minutes but could
not capitalize. For the Pioneers, Katrina
Weisbecker took a nice shot from about 15 yards out that missed
just high and the Boxers played a ball into the middle of the field
that Pioneer defender Maddie Harper made
a good play on to shut down the Boxer attack.
Then with 9:38 left in the first half, Pacific's Kelsey Lockwood
found Ashley Kanda on the left side of the box where she took a low
shot finding the back of the net in the far right corner. The
Pioneers could not answer but Pacific added to their goal total in
the 44th minute on a beautiful corner kick by Jordan Bodily that
Mariah Schoniwitz headed in for her first goal of the season.
At the half the score was 2-0 in favor of Pacific and the Boxers
did not back down. In the 54th minute, Kirsten Dick found Jenny
Novak on a breakaway in the middle of the field that she put past
goalkeeper Elise Delgado.
Novak was not finished for the day as she scored again 12 minutes
later on a nice lob shot after snagging a loose ball on a corner
kick. Novak's two goals on the day bring her season total to a team
leading four goals.
The Pioneers had a few good opportunities in the second half. Lexi Bolton took
a good shot from the right side of the goal that boxer Goalkeeper
Brittany Hartmann saved. Then Andi
Glaeser found some room on the right side taking a shot that
backup goalkeeper Kayla Davidson stopped. The Pioneers finally
found the back of the net on a corner kick from Emilia Emmetti
that Kitts headed in off the cross bar.
The Boxers outshot the Pioneers 15-14 and 10-8 in shots on goal.
Novak and Kanda led Pacific taking three shot each while Glaeser
and Bolton led Lewis & Clark with three shots apiece as well.
Delgado had six saves on the day while the Boxer goalkeepers
combined for seven. Hartmann received the victory in goal for the
Boxers.
The Pioneers return to the field again on Saturday, Oct. 9th at
Whitworth University. The game is scheduled for a noon start
time.
