PORTLAND, Ore. – The women's soccer
team played Pacific Lutheran (3-11-1, 3-8-1 NWC) on Sunday in an
exciting overtime match. Lewis & Clark (3-10-3 was victorious
as Katrina Weisbecker scored her second goal of the day in the
first overtime period. The 3-2 win gives the Pioneers their first
conference win of the year.
The heavy rain and strong wind did not stop Pacific Lutheran and
Lewis & Clark from playing a well played and evenly matched
game on Sunday. Both teams seemed poised for a victory from the
start. PLU jumped out to an early lead on a beautifully struck ball
from the right side by Mimi Granlund in the tenth minute. Granlund
curled a ball from 20 yards out that found its way past goalkeeper
Elise Delgado off the left post and into the back of the net.
Jordann Gilmer assisted on the goal.
The Pioneers would answer however as Katie Browning corralled a
loose ball off of an Emilia Emmetti corner kick. Browning turned
and fired. Using her left from 18 yards out, she snuck the ball
into the top of the goal over the leaping PLU goalkeeper, Lauren
Chambard. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.
The second half brought many scoring chances as both PLU and
Lewis & Clark attacked on offense. In the 63rd minute The
Pioneers capitalized as Weisbecker hustled down a loose ball and
beat a PLU defender around the left side. Weisbecker then took a
nice shot for her first goal of the game.
The Lutes responded only six minutes later off the foot of Karli
Hurlbut. Hurlbut faked a shot and made a few excellent moves that
allowed her to weave through the Pioneer defense. She then placed a
nice lob over Delgado to tie the game at 2-2.
The second half ended in a 2-2 tie and the Pioneers wasted no
time in the first overtime period. In the fourth minute of overtime
Weisbecker scored again, faking left, cutting right, and chipping a
ball into the bottom right corner.
The win is the first for the pioneers in conference, breaking a
tough winless streak.
Delgado had a solid day with 11 saves in the game while
Weisbecker led the Pioneers with eight shots scoring twice. For
PLU, Hurlbut and Erica Boyle took three shots apiece both shooting
twice on goal. The Lutes outshot the Pioneers 17-14 and 13-6 on
goal.
The next game for Lewis & Clark is next Saturday Oct. 30th
at Pacific University starting at noon.
