SPOKANE, Wash. – The Lewis & Clark
women's basketball team dropped a 75-65 decision to the
Whitworth Pirates on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse in
a Northwest Conference matchup.
The win helps the Pirates move into a tie for third place in the
conference with the Pioneers with a 6-4 NWC record, while improving
their overall record to 10-9. The Pioneers are now 12-7 on the
season.
The Pioneers jumped ahead early in the first half, posting a 15-8
lead after a made three-pointer from sophomore Megan Spence. The
Pirates managed to tie the score at 18-18 on a Kim Bluff basket
with 9:52 remaining in the half. Neva Hauser would give the
Pioneers a six point lead just two plays later, hitting a
three-pointer with 8:53 left in the half. Whitworth would once
again tie the game, this time at 27-27 with 4:38 on the clock with
a good three-pointer from Katie Delaney. The Pirates would forge an
11-0 run over a five minute span to take a 33-27 lead with two
minutes to play in the period. Two made free throws by the Pirates
in the final seconds of the half, sent Whitworth into the break
with a 38-33 advantage.
In the second half, the Pioneers fought their way back into the
contest on several occasions, beginning with made free throws from
Sara Villanueva that tied the contest at 45-45.The Pioneers managed
to pull back within one point, 54-53, on a Kristina Williams layup
with 9:29 left to play, after trading baskets with the Pirates up
to that point. Whitworth would answer back by going on a 9-0 run to
take a double-digit lead and would not look back, cruising to the
75-65 victory.
Villanueva paced the way for the Pios, scoring 14 points, while
Williams and Spence each contributed 12 points. Spence also chipped
in seven rebounds as did teammate Talerra Rich.
Natalie Orrell led the Pirates with 14 poitns, while Leah Pomante
scored 13 points.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. when they
head to McMinnville to face the Linfield Wildcats.
