PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team took down the Whitworth Pirates 67-63 in a
Northwest Conference contest on Sunday afternoon in the Pamplin
Sports Complex. The Pioneers improve to 8-3 on the season and 2-0
in conference play, while the Pirates fall to 5-6 overall and 1-1
in the NWC.
The Pioneers put together a 7-0 run in the opening three minutes of
the game, before the Pirates were able to get on the board with a
three-pointer from Kim Bluff. Christina Herring put the Pioneers up
12-5 with a made three-pointer with 13:11 on the clock, helping the
Pios keep a safe distance from Whitworth. Megan Spence drained a
jumper with a second left in the half to increase the Pio lead to
nine and send her team into the locker room up 29-20.
The second half began with the Pioneers retaining control of the
game, taking a 37-25 lead with 17:09 remaining. Lewis & Clark
kept the Pirates at bay for much of the second half, not letting
them any closer than seven points throughout the first
three-quarters of the half. Whitworth refused to go away pulling
within two points with 27 seconds remaining courtesy of a Leah
Pomante free-throw. The two sides jostled back and forth for a
couple seconds before Kristina Williams sealed the 67-63 victory
with back-to-back made free-throws.
The Pioneers were led by Dowling and Rich who both ended with a
game-high 16 points, while Dowling picked up the double-double with
11 rebounds. Williams finished with 14 points for the Pios,
shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Cassie Pilkinton and Lauren Picha each put up 13 points in the
Pirates efforts, while teammate Natalie Orrell finished with 10
points.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. when they
play host to the Linfield Wildcats.
