PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team, paced by Christina Herring, took down the Whitman
Missionaries 53-38 in the teams Northwest Conference opener at the
Pamplin Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The opening moments of the game saw both teams struggle to settle
down, with the two sides tying the game three times in the first
six minutes with neither team earning more than a three point
advantage. The Pioneers would find their shot with 11:39 on the
clock, taking a 10-8 lead on a Jodi Snider three-pointer that
jumped started the Pioneer offense. The Pioneers would never
relinquish control of the scoreboard after that moment, running up
a 13-point advantage with 3:01 on the clock with Megan Spence
hitting a jumper with an assist from Herring. The Missionaries
would earn a couple points back, sending the Pioneers into the
locker room with a 27-17 lead.
The second half began with the Missionaries shooting right out of
the gate, cutting the score to 27-19 on a Michelle Krall jumper.
The basket did little to rattle the Pioneers who pulled out to
another double-digit lead with 14:49 on the clock, this time never
allowing Whitman closer than 10 points. The Pioneers largest lead
of the game came on a Margaret Dowling jumper with 7:27 remaining,
pushing the Pios to a 48-29 lead. The Missionaries tried to fight
their way back in the contest with Dawna Mello draining a
three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining, but it was not enough to
stop the Pios from earning the 53-38 victory.
Herring posted her second double-double of the season, putting up
10 points and dishing out 10 assists. Dowling contributed nine
points and seven rebounds, while Kristina Williams and Neva Hauser
each had eight points.
Krall finished with 10 points for the Missionaries, while chipping
in five assists. Rebecca Sexton also ended with five assists, while
scoring six points for Whitman.
The Pioneers return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 1 p.m. when
they host the Whitworth Pirates in a NWC contest.
