Pioneers Drop Heartbreaker To Pacific On Road 80-70

FOREST GROVE, Ore., - The Lewis & Clark Pioneer women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road to Northwest Conference and in-state opponent Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday night in Forest Grove. The Pioneers, who held the lead heading into halftime, fell to the Boxers by the final score 80-70. Christina Herring led the Pioneers in points netting 17 points, while teammate Margaret Dowling recorded a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Rochelle Reeves of Pacific (Ore.) led all players in points with 18, while Herring was the Pioneers leading scorer with 17. Dowling had a game-high 11 rebounds on her way to the games only double-double of the night. Erica Schultz of Pacific had 10 boards for the Boxers.

Dowling began the scoring with 19:33 on the clock, laying one up in the paint to give the Pioneers an early 2-0 advantage. The lead would remain with the Pioneers for the first five minutes of the game before the Boxers were able to tie things up 7-7 at the 16:18 mark on a made free throw.

Kelly Vega regained the Pioneer lead with 13:07 to play, draining on open 3-pointer just seconds after a team timeout. Vega would find her shooting stride, scoring 11 of the Pioneers 20 points in the final 13 minutes of the half sending her team into the locker room with a 34-29 advantage.

The Pioneers would come out of the half shooting, racking up a nine point advantage with 17:13 to play on a made free throw from Kim Kittell. The Boxers would slowly begin chipping away at the Pioneer lead, but would be unable to take control of the scoreboard until the final seven minutes. After capturing the lead Pacific (Ore.) would never look back, despite the Pioneers best efforts of a comeback.

The Pioneers were 22-55 (.400) from the floor, while shooting 22-31 (.710) from the free throw line. The Boxers were not much better, shooting .443 (27-61) from field goal range and .808 (21-26) from the charity stripe.

Lewis & Clark return home for its next contest, hosting Linfield on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Pamplin Sports Center. The Pioneers will honor lone senior Emily Deichsel for her contribution to Lewis & Clark over the course of her career. In celebration of the 23rd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which was held February 4, both Lewis & Clark women's basketball team and the Pioneer Athletics Club are sponsoring "Bring a Girl to the Game Night" for this event with the first 30 girls under age 12 receiving a FREE basketball.
