WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The road was unkind to
the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team who found
themselves down by 19 points in the second
half of action against Whitman on Friday night, as the Missionaries
rolled to a 67-54 victory in Northwest Conference action.
Lewis & Clark falls to 11-13 on the season and 5-10 in the NWC,
while Whitman improves to 18-7 (10-6 NWC). The Pioneers received 16
points from Megan
Spence and 15 from Christina Herring. Margaret Dowling
led both schools in rebounds collecting 14 boards on the night.
Rebecca Sexton led Whitman in points with 17, while completing the
double-double with 10 rebounds. Jenele Peterson added 11 points,
while Jennifer Keyes chipped in 10 points for the home squad.
The Missionaries were up by as many as 10 points in the first half,
heading into the locker room with a 29-25 advantage at the
intermission. The Pioneers would be unable to find a rhythm in the
second half, as Whitman came out of the gates shooting and begin
the period with an 11-0 run that pushed their lead to 59-40 with
seven minutes remaining.
The Pioneers ended the night shooting 29.8 percent (17-57) from the
floor, while converting 15 of their 21 free throws. Whitman shot
41.5 percent from the floor and 90.5 percent (19-21) from the
charity stripe.
Lewis & Clark concludes the 2008-09 season against Whitworth
University in Spokane, Wash., on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
