The Pioneer women's basketball team dropped the
first of their two weekend games, falling to the #23 Puget Sound
Loggers 66-56 (

score) Friday night at the Pamplin Sports Center. Kim Kittell
scored 13 points to lead the Pioneers.
The Loggers jumped out to an early 11-4 lead. The Loggers
pushed the advantage out to 12, 21-9 on a three-pointer by Chelsi
Shaw with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Pioneers cut the
lead back down to seven, on a jumper by Kelly Vega (sophomore,
Clackamas, Ore.). The Loggers answered with more three-point
shooting, going back up by 12, 28-16, on a three by Laura Hirsch
with 5:30 remaining in the first half. Three pointers by the
Pioneers' Shawna Castle (senior, Rocklin, Calif.) and Allison Farr
(senior, Lakeport, Calif.) in the final two minutes of the half
brought the Pioneers to back within seven. The Loggers took a 35-28
advantage into the break.
The Pioneers pulled within five, 39-34, on a layup by Kim
Kittell (sophomore, Tillamook, Ore.) four minutes into the second
half, the closest they would come to erasing the deficit. Puget
Sound built a 19 point lead, 61-44, with 5:39 left in the game. The
Pioneers closed out the game outscoring the Loggers 12-5 in the
final five minutes, getting back to within single digits just once,
as the Loggers held on for the 66-56 victory.
UPS hit eight three-point field goals in the contest, shooting
47.1% from long range. The Pioneers hit just four.
Morgan Harter and Laura Hirsh each scored 18 points for the
Loggers. Harter was 5-7 shooting, hitting both of her three-point
attempts. She had a team-high nine rebounds, as well as three
assists. Hirsh hit four threes (4-8). She had two blocks, two
assists, and two rebounds.
For the Pioneers, Kim Kittell led the team with 13 points,
Kittell also had five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Allison Farr scored 12 points with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Kelly Vega had ten points and two blocks. Crystal Castle (senior,
Rocklin, Calif.) had a game-high 12 rebounds.
With the win, the Loggers, ranked 23rd in the lastest d3Hoops
poll, improve to 13-3 (6-1 NWC). The Pioneers fall to 7-9 (3-4
NWC).
The Pioneers are back home tomorrow night, hosting the Linfield
Wildcats. Tipoff is at 6pm.
