Women’s Basketball Secures First NWC Win in Overtime at Pacific Lutheran

Lauryn Frederickson posted 21 points and 13 rebounds; Kaitlen Carns scored 14 in 72-62 overtime road win.

PARKLAND, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College women's basketball made 12 free throws in the extra period to secure its first Northwest Conference game of the season, defeating Pacific Lutheran University 72-62 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Olson Auditorium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Junior Lauryn Frederickson recorded her 11th career double-double, finishing with season highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Lewis & Clark.
 
Sophomore Kaitlen Carns scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out two assists. She went 10-for-12 from the free throw line, including five makes in overtime, and added a team-high four steals.
 
First-year Lilly Jordan finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She connected on 3-of-5 attempts from three-point range and pulled down four rebounds.
 
First-year Ali McCauley scored 10 points and collected a career-high eight rebounds off the bench. Junior Divinity Singleton added eight points and a collegiate-best 10 rebounds.
 
The teams traded leads throughout regulation. Pacific Lutheran opened with a 7-4 run, but Lewis & Clark answered with their own 7-4 spurt to tie the game at 11-all after the first quarter.
 
Pacific Lutheran regained the lead early in the second quarter, but senior Tatiana Rebanal scored five points during a 7-0 Lewis & Clark run that ended with a Rebanal three-pointer off a turnover to make it 18-13 with 6:45 remaining. The Lutes responded to tie the game at 23-all with just over three minutes left before halftime, then hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a 29-23 advantage. Singleton made two free throws, and Jordan drilled a three to cut the deficit to 29-28 at the break.

The third quarter featured limited scoring, with each team tallying 14 points. Pacific Lutheran held a slim 43-42 lead entering the fourth quarter after Jordan and McCauley each hit three-pointers to erase a seven-point Lutes advantage.
 
The final period included five lead changes and four ties. Jordan knocked down a three-pointer with 4:51 remaining to give Lewis & Clark a 49-48 edge. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch, and Frederickson's layup with 2:14 left tied the game at 53-all.
 
Singleton put Lewis & Clark ahead 54-53 after going 1-for-2 at the free throw line with 1:32 remaining. With 19 seconds left, Jordan split a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 55-53 lead. After a Pacific Lutheran timeout that advanced the ball, Carns tipped the inbound pass to McCauley, who was fouled. McCauley made the first of two free throws. The Lutes again advanced the ball and missed a three-point attempt but drew a foul on the rebound with one second remaining.
 
Pacific Lutheran's Lilli Williams made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. Teammate Emi Wada secured the rebound with 0.9 seconds left and hit a jumper, but the clock did not start. After review, the basket was counted, and 0.2 seconds were added. Lewis & Clark's ensuing inbound was tipped away, sending the game to overtime.
 
Lewis & Clark controlled the extra period, scoring the first seven points in just under two minutes. The visitors outscored the Lutes 16-6 in overtime, fueled by a 12-for-14 performance at the free throw line. Frederickson converted four free throws, and Carns scored seven of her 14 points in the extra session.
