Head coach Shawna Cyrus became the first major award winner in program history

HILLSBORO, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College softball head coach Shawna Cyrus earned Northwest Conference Coach of the Year honors to lead a program-record nine honorees on the NWC All-Conference Team, the league office announced Friday afternoon.

Junior shortstop Emily Patton was named to the NWC All-Conference First Team. Graduate student first baseman Mari Alvarez, junior pitcher Maggie O'Leary, junior second baseman Gina Ozuna, junior outfielder Madison Scroggins, sophomore third baseman Harper Campanella and sophomore outfielder/designated player Makena Dahir each carved out spots on the NWC Second Team. Senior outfielder Sam Gildersleeve was selected to the NWC Honorable Mention Team. Five of the Pioneers honorees are repeat winners, while Scroggins and Dahir each were recognized for the first times in their careers. The Pioneers nine total honorees are their most in program history. The 2007 and 2004 teams each had eight players recognized on the All-Conference Teams.

Cyrus earns her first career Coach of the Year honors and the first for Lewis & Clark in program history. She is the first member of the program to earn an NWC major award. The 16th-year head coach has led Lewis & Clark to their most successful run in program history the past two seasons – which culminated in their first NCAA Tournament appearance this week. This year's team has set program records for wins (32), conference wins (21), batting average (.348), slugging percentage (.484), hits (302), runs (291), hit by pitches (39) and doubles (71) in a single-season. Softball has earned votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) twice this season. It marked the first time in program history the Pioneers have received votes in the National Poll. Earlier this season, she became the first female coach in school history to reach 200 career wins with one program at L&C. She ranks fourth all-time in school history with her 215 victories.

After being named to the Honorable Mention Team as a sophomore, Patton made the leap to the First Team this Spring. She made a big jump both offensively and defensively as a junior. Patton has started every game this season at shortstop and posted new career-highs in hits (47), runs (35), RBI (26), total bases (55), walks (12) and stolen bases (14-15). She has also delivered a career-best 79 assists and .966 fielding percentage and has turned two double plays. Patton sits in the top-three on the team in hits, runs, walks and stolen bases. She has posted a hit in 32 contests and 11 multi-hit contests. The junior put together one of the best games of her career on April 27 against the University of Puget Sound. Patton went 3-3 with four runs scored, an RBI, a walk and scored the game-winning run in a 9-8 win over the Loggers.

Alvarez is the first five-time All-Conference honoree in program history. The graduate student first baseman earned her third career NWC Second Team accolades (2022, 24-25). She was named to the First Team in 2023 and the HM Team as a first year in 2021. The fifth-year player put together a line of .348/.447/.504 in her final season in the Orange and Black. Alvarez leads the team with her single-season record 14 hit by pitches. She ranks in the top-three on the team in RBI (32) and doubles (12) and has played in all 43 games this season. The first baseman holds the program record for career games played (188)/games started (181), hits (185) and doubles (41). Alvarez celebrated Senior Day with one of the best doubleheaders of her career. She went 6-6 with three RBI, two runs scored, a double and a walk, in a sweep over George Fox University.

O'Leary was recognized by the NWC Coaches for a second-straight season. After being named to the NWC First Team as a sophomore, she earned a spot on the NWC Second Team this season. The Pioneers junior ace set the program record for wins in a single-season (21) and the career marks for wins (39), saves (seven) and strikeouts (262) this Spring. O'Leary leads Lewis & Clark in wins (21-8), saves (three), appearances (34)/starts (23), earned run average (3.27), innings pitched (154.1), strikeouts (103), shutouts (two), complete games (nine), and opponent's batting average (.240). She ranks 10th in NCAA DIII in appearances, 11th in wins and 25th in innings pitched. The junior started the season 10-0 and earned wins in 10 of the team's first 13 contests. Two of her best outings of the year came on April 6 against Whitworth University and May 9 against Pacific Lutheran University. In the win over Whitworth, O'Leary tied her career-high with 12 strikeouts and she was nearly unhittable in a 5-3 win. The junior threw a career-high eight innings and gave up just two earned runs in Lewis & Clark's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Lutes in the NWC Tournament.

Ozuna earned her second-straight NWC Second Team accolades. The junior second baseman started every game this season and served as the table-setter for the Pioneers lineup. She is hitting .348 on the year, with a .439 on-base percentage and .514 slugging percentage. Ozuna sits in the top-five on the team in hits (48), runs scored (42), RBI (28), doubles (eight) and stolen bases (seven). She leads the team with her 18 walks. The second baseman hit safely in 33 contests, including a 13-game hitting streak from March 15-April 6. She has posted 12 multi-hit contests. The junior currently sits fourth in program history in career runs scored (89) and her 42 runs scored this season are tied with Gildersleeve for the most in program history for a single-season. Ozuna put together the best doubleheader of her season on April 5 against Whitworth. She went 4-5 with four runs scored, five RBI, a double, a home run and three walks.

Scroggins is a first-time honoree, after putting together the best season of her career. The junior left fielder has played in 40 games and made 35 starts. She has posted new career-highs in batting average (.368), on-base percentage (.412), slugging percentage (.434), hits (39), total bases (46), stolen bases (8-10) and home runs (one). Scroggins has proven to be the Pioneers top defensive outfielder, if not the top defender in the NWC. She has registered a .989 fielding percentage with 87 putouts and two outfield assists. The left fielder has made a number of highlight reel diving catches and jumping catches at the wall. Scroggins has hit safely in 24 contests and notched 13 multi-hit contests. She delivered one of the best games of her career on April 5 in game two against Whitworth. Scroggins went 3-3 with three runs, two RBI and went 2-2 on the basepaths.

Campanella picked up the second-straight All-Conference accolades of her career. She was named to the NWC First Team as a first year. Despite an injury in early April that has lingered, Campanella has played in 32 games and made 28 starts. She is hitting .345 with a .372 on-base percentage and a .425 slugging percentage. Campanella has delivered 30 hits, 16 runs, 19 RBI, a double and two home runs. She has worked five walks and struck out just six times in 87 at-bats. The third baseman has hit safely in 20 contests and posted eight multi-hit contests. She opened NWC play with one of her best doubleheaders of the year. On March 8 against Willamette, Campanella went 4-8 with two runs, four RBI and a pair of home runs.

Dahir made the biggest jump of any Lewis & Clark player this season. After starting nine games as a first year, she started all 43 games this year either as an outfielder or a designated player. Dahir was used primarily as a center fielder but also made starts in left and right field. She posted career-highs in every statistical category. Dahir ranks second on the team in home runs (four) and third in RBI (31) and total bases (70). She ranks in the top-five on the team with her .366 average, .426 on-base percentage, .569 slugging percentage, 45 hits, 27 runs scored and 11 walks. She has registered a .962 fielding percentage with 50 putouts and one assist. In the Northwest Conference Tournament, Dahir went 2-3 with a run scored, two RBI, a double and a walk, to help lead the Pioneers past George Fox 7-5 and earn a spot in the NWC Championship Series.

Gildersleeve earned her fourth career All-Conference honors. She was named to the NWC First Team in 2021 and 2024 and the Honorable Mention Team in 2022 and 2025. The fifth-year senior played in all 42 games and started 41 contests. She leads the team in on-base percentage (.466), slugging percentage (.680), hits (50), RBI (37), total bases (87), stolen bases (20-21) and home runs (six). She is tied for the team lead in runs scored (42) and is second in batting average (.390). The right fielder owns the career programs records for RBI (132), runs scored (132) and HR (42). Gildersleeve posted a hit in 31 contests, recorded 16 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI contests. She played a major role in the Pioneers win over then #4 Linfield University on April 19. Gildersleeve finished 2-3 with two runs and an RBI and hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-2 victory.
