Men's Track & Field Posts Nine Top-10 Performances At Western Oregon

Four Pioneers ran top-10 times in program history in the 5,000M on Friday night

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's track & field sophomore Harrison Fung won the 400M Hurdles, to lead the Pioneers at the two-day John Knight Twilight Meet.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers posted eight top-50 performances in program history and added nine top-10 showings, in their second-to-last tune-up before the Northwest Conference Championship Meet.Ā

Fung recorded Lewis & Clark's lone win of the weekend on the men's side in the 400M Hurdles. He finished first out of 32 competitors with a PR time of 54.55. He finished 1.39 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from host Western Oregon University (NCAA DII) and 2.41 seconds ahead of the second-fastest NCAA DIII runner. His time moved him into seventh place in program history.Ā

The Pioneers added a second-place finish in the 4x400M Relay. The quartet of Fung, sophomore Jordan Wu and juniors Jordan Lahusky and Noah Nelson placed second out of 17 teams. They crossed the line in 3:24.60 to finish behind only Western Oregon. Their time was the 74th-fastest in DIII this year.Ā

Fung added his third big result of the weekend in the 400M. He placed sixth out of 39 runners with a PR time of 49.82. The mark moved him into 23rdĀ in program history. Lahusky placed 23rdĀ in the event with a time of 51.97.Ā

The Pioneers had four runners record top-10 times in program history in the 5,000M. Senior Peter Ford led the quartet by finishing second in a field of 60 runners. He crossed the line in 14:42.61 to move into sixth-place in program history. Sophomore Samuel Garcia was fourth overall in the event. His time of 14:45.56 is the seventh-fastest in program history. Sophomores Evan Markelz and Quinn Higgins finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh places. Markelz (14:46.22) and Higgins (14:48.94) are now eighth and ninth all-time in the event.Ā

Junior Noah Nelson notched a top-five finish and mark all-time in the 800M. He placed fifth out of 85 runners in the 800M with a PR time of 1:52.41. His time moved him into fifth place in program history and 17thĀ in the nation in the event. Wu finished 69thĀ overall with a time of 2:05.37. Sophomore Emil Miller came in 77thĀ with a mark of 2:07.53.Ā

Nelson also led the Pioneers in the 1,500M. His season-best time of 4:03.84 put him 16thĀ out of 95 runners. Wu crossed the line in a PR time of 4:16.29 to take 61stĀ place.Ā

Senior JT Willis made the finals in the javelin. He placed eighth out of 30 throwers and registered a top-50 mark all-time. His first throw traveled 50.90M (167-00 Feet) to move him into 42ndĀ in program history. Junior Jon Fritz took 16thĀ in the event with a conference-qualifying mark of 48.70M (159-09 Feet).Ā

Fritz was the Pioneers lone entrant in the 100M Hurdles. He finished the race in a season-best time of 16.59 to finish in 16thĀ place.Ā

First year Jaden Mwendapole added a PR time in the 100M. He finished 34thĀ out of 48 runners with a time of 11.40. Fritz notched a season-best time of 11.46 to come in 39th.Ā

Sophomore Keegan Zaso led two Lewis & Clark athletes in the long jump. Zaso leaped 6.06M (19-10.75 Feet) to finish 16thĀ out of 35 competitors. First year Kris Adams took 22ndĀ place with a jump of 5.97M (19-07.00 Feet).Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Fung's time in the 400M Hurdles was the 22ndĀ fastest time in NCAA DIII this season.Ā 
  • Ford (26th), Garcia (38th), Markelz (42nd) and Higgins (51st) all ran top-60 times in NCAA DIII this year in the 5,000M.Ā 
  • Fung now sits seventh in program history in the 400M Hurdles and 23rd in the 400M. He's also been a part of two 4x400M Relay teams that rank in the top-30 in program history.Ā 
  • Ford now owns the fastest time in the Northwest Conference this year in the 5,000M. Garcia (third), Markelz (fifth) and Higgins (eighth) are also in the top-10.Ā 
  • Fung ran the fastest time by an NWC runner in the 400M Hurdles this season and the fifth-fastest in the 400M. The Pioneers 4x400M relay team's time is the third-fastest mark of the year.Ā

Lewis & Clark will close out the regular season when they host the L&C Larry Byerly Invite on Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers will honor their seniors at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.Ā
