Box Score 2 MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College men's tennis kicked off their 2023-24 season with a three-way ITA tune-up tournament against Northwest Conference foes Linfield University and Pacific University at the Linfield Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore
Kai Wills and freshmen
Noah Sutin and
Bridger Galyardt finished 3-0 in singles play over the two days to lead the Pios. Wills and Sutin also teamed up for doubles play and went 3-0 to finish a perfect 6-0 on the weekend. Galyardt paired with senior
Logan Hausler for two doubles wins to finish 5-0 over the two days.
"We competed pretty well overall and stepped it up on day two," said head coach
Jimmy Chau.
Much like a dual match with singles players 1-6 and doubles teams 1-3, this weekend's tournament was set up with six singles pods and three doubles pods. The tournament was round-robin, so each player or team played an opposing school's entrant once in each pod.
Sutin and junior
Matt Chio represented Lewis & Clark in Pod 1. Suttin went 2-0 on day one and 1-0 on the final day; his final two matches both went three sets. Chio went 1-2 overall, with his win coming on day two.
Senior
Miles Stone and freshman
Joey Lyon played in the second pod of the tournament. Both Pioneers went 1-1 on the first day. Lyon won his day two match to finish 2-1. Stone took the first set against Pacific's Ryley Chang 6-4 but lost the next two 6-4, 10-7 to finish 1-2.
Wills and fellow sophomores
Wade McDermott and
Landon Cronin competed in Pod 3 for the Pioneers. Wills' final two matches went three sets. His day two win against Pacific's Dawson Hose was 7-5, 6-7(3), 10-5. McDermott finished 1-2, picking up his win on the second day, a three-setter over Linfield's Alexander Rosenquist. Cronin went 1-1 on the first day and won a three-setter on day two.

Max Furman played the day two Pod 4 match, falling to Pacific's Jonathan Nguyen 7-5, 6-4.
Furman competed in the fifth pod on day one, while Hausler and Galyardt competed both days in Pod 5. Furman finished 2-0 in his first collegiate matches. Hausler went 2-1 in the pod, with his loss coming in the second match on day one. He fell to Linfield's Cody Pickar 6-1, 5-7, 14-12. Freshman

Lewis & Clark went 15-3 in doubles play over the two days. Wills and Sutton won their Pod one matches by scores of 8-3, 8-5, and 8-5. McDermott and Lyon went 2-1 in the first pod, winning 8-2 and 8-4.
