THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 1, Edmonds C.C. 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-1)
(Edmonds C.C. 2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Andrés Soto Hernández scored a free kick goal in the 66
th minute and freshmen goalies
Ben Tallent and
Declan Cloutier combined for an eight-save shutout to lead the Pioneers to the win. The stats from Sunday's contest do not count for the Pioneers season or career totals because it was an exhibition game.
After a difficult season opener on Friday, the Pioneers came out and played a much more even first half against the Tritons, but struggled to generate much offense.
The game was delayed for 30-minutes due to a lightning delay late in the half and the delay seemed to benefit the Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark came out of the two-minute halftime break aggressive and played some of their best soccer of the season in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.
Their strong play paid off in the 66
th minute when the Pioneers earned a free kick outside the Edmonds box. Soto Hernández lifted a ball from the left side of the box to the back post and the Edmonds keeper couldn't make the save as he and a Pioneer went up for the lofted ball.
The Tritons threw everything they had at the Pioneers in the final 25 minutes but Tallent and then Cloutier held strong.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Edmonds outshot the Pioneers 20-7 and held an 8-1 shots on goal edge. The Tritons led 7-4 in shots on goal.
- Tallent made six saves in 82:43 before giving way to Cloutier. Cloutier tacked on two saves in the final 7:17.
- The two teams combined for six yellow cards.
- Sunday's win was the team's first win of the year, after three scrimmages and one regular-season contest.
