THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 3, Multnomah 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Three different Pioneers found the back of the net, as Lewis & Clark earned their second win of any kind this season and scored multiple goals for the first time.
Sophomore captain
Andrés Soto Hernández finished with a goal and an assist in the victory. Freshman
Levi Stahl and
Wesley Esparza Salazar also scored in the victory.
In net, freshman goalie
Declan Cloutier made four saves on six shots to earn his first win of the year.
After being shutout by the Multnomah Reserves in early September, Lewis & Clark came out on fire and gave the Lions back line fits throughout the game. Multnomah aimed to play a high line to keep the Pioneers offside but it allowed Lewis & Clark plenty of space to get in behind the defense.
After several early chances, Esparza Salazar opened the scoring six minutes into the contest. He received a pass at the top of the box, weaved his way through two defenders and ripped a shot back across the goal mouth for a 1-0 advantage.
Multnomah tied the game at 27:50. After they earned a free kick just outside the box, Juan Corredor ripped a shot just inside the near post for a 1-1 tie.
The Pioneers retook the lead in the 64
th minute. After an
Aashir Walson free kick was blocked over the bar, the Pioneers scored on the ensuing free kick. Soto Hernández whipped an in-swinging corner kick to the top of the six and Stahl headed it past the keeper for a 2-1 lead at 63:38.
Lewis & Clark doubled their lead at 84:17. Sophomore captain
Beno Boda, who was making his collegiate debut, won a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge just outside the box and cut the ball back for Soto Hernández-who calmly settled the ball and ripped a shot past the keeper.
Multnomah scored a consolation goal off a corner kick with 11 seconds remaining but that would be as close as the visitors would get.
