Myers kicks game-winning goal in double overtime

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers (11-6-3, 9-5-2 NWC) closed out the 2021 season with a 1-0 win over the Puget Sound Loggers, their second victory of the weekend on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium. Alexa Myers scored the game-winning goal with 1:08 left in the second overtime when the Pioneers were awarded a free kick off a foul on Celeste Schreifels. This win gives the Pioneers their most NWC wins in school history.

The Pioneers outshot the Loggers 13-9, with Schreifels, Chloe Helenihi and Brecklyn Beighle leading the scoring efforts with a combined 11 shots. Beighle went three for three with shots on goal while Schreifels had four of five on target. Puget Sound earned six corner kicks to the Pioneers' two but were unable to break through the Pioneers' defense. Myers, Madi Pastores, Abby Hayes and Olivia Cowley played a critical part in the defensive line that broke up the Loggers' attacks.

The Pioneers will graduate three seniors from the squad. They honored Sara Klott, Angelina Peterson and Abby Prager before the start of the game with a Senior Day ceremony with families. Prager tended goal for the full 108 minutes for Lewis & Clark and made seven saves in their final game on Palatine Hill.

Key Moments

The game saw some spectacular defensive play from both teams, with the Pioneers doing well in winning one-on-one balls and breaking up attacks from the Loggers (16-2-2, 12-2-2 NWC) combined with key saves from Prager through both halves.

The game picked up speed and momentum in overtime, with Helenihi creating an opportunity within the first minute of play but overshooting the goal and sending the ball wide to the right. Lewis & Clark was able to fire off another three shots before time ran out in the first overtime. The Loggers came close to ending the game in the 105th minute when Kylee Roath kicked a shot that bounced off the left post and was deflected away.

With time dwindling, Quincy Bento fouled Schreifels in the Pioneers' attacking third of the field setting Lewis & Clark up for a free kick at the 39-yard line. Myers stepped up to take the kick for the Pioneers. Her foot connected with the ball with 1:10 left on the clock, sending it up and over the head of Loggers' goalie Chaylea Tome into the top left corner of the net to win the game.
