In season finale, Romo, Cerne hit career highs in one-point defeat

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Peyton Romo scored 20 points including six 3-pointers in Saturday's 72-71 loss to the Pacific Lutheran Lutes at Pamplin Sports Center.

In the season finale, which included recognizing lone senior Blythe Ballesteros before the game, PLU's Kylie Rademacher scored the go-ahead basket with 2:24 remaining in the game. The teams struggled to score more in the final minutes. Delsie Johnson split two free throws with 1:06 remaining, but the Pios missed their only other shot attempt the rest of the way to fall by one.

Jessica Cerne scored 18 to join Romo with a new career high. Johnson finished with a team-high 19 points. Hannah Martin had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Key Moments

Much like a week ago in a win over Linfield, the Pioneers had a good third quarter, a period that had hampered Lewis & Clark throughout the year. Tied at 42 out of halftime, the Pioneers outscored the Lutes 22-14 for an eight-point lead going to the fourth. Martin had seven points in the third, and Romo hit two of her six triples in the quarter.

Jorie Lambert, who finished with 11 points off the bench, hit a three, and Toni Thibert nabbed a steal and score in the first 45 seconds of the fourth quarter and the Lutes (11-14, 6-10 NWC) closed back within three. Emma Janousek hit one of her four 3-pointers, and one of PLU's nine in the game, with 3:03 left to give PLU its first lead since the mid-second quarter.

The Pioneers (3-21, 2-14 NWC) missed their final four field-goal attempts and split the free-throw attempts by Johnson in the final three minutes.

Deeper Look

  • Janousek finished with a game-high 28 points, the second most scored by a Lewis & Clark opponent this season
  • Lewis & Clark's nine 3-pointers are its second-highest total all season, and Romo's six are the most by a single student-athlete in one game this year
  • Martin led the Pios in assists (3) and blocks (2), while Johnson had a team-high two steals
  • Shooting 50 percent on Saturday, Cerne finished 45 percent or better in three of her last four games this season
  • Johnson surpassed 700 career points (702) through her first two seasons; the Pioneers career scoring record is 1,864 by Kathy Gibson (1990-94)
  • She finished the season with 417 career rebounds, a record also held by Gibson (885)
  • Johnson's 117 made free throws was tops in the Northwest Conference this season; she finished fourth overall in rebounds per game (8.4) and fifth in points per game (15.3)
  • Her 15.3 scoring average is the highest by a Pios student-athlete since Katie Anderson scored 15.5 per game in the 2013-14 season

Looking Ahead

With Ballesteros moving on, the Pioneers will have their entire roster due back for the 2020-21 season.
