PORTLAND, Ore. -- After eight corner kicks without a goal-scoring opportunity, the ninth one found its mark. Lewis & Clark's Kennie Beighle sent the ball sailing onto the pitch where midfielder Becca McCullough lined up perfectly to send the ball right to the back of the net. The overtime goal ended the match, sealing a 1-0 win for the Lewis & Clark Pioneers over the Caltech Beavers in the Pios' home opener.

The fast-paced and physical game showed the hunger and promise of the 2019 squad, with both Beighle and McCullough describing the day's maneuvers as a full team effort. The Pioneers dominated possession in the first half, taking eight of their 16 shots and keeping the Beavers' defense on their toes. A few injuries in the second half slowed the momentum slightly, but the Pios still mounted a strong offensive challenge, outshooting the Beavers 5-4.

Freshman Julia Markmann led the team with four shots while goalie Abby Prager made both saves of the game to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.

Key Moments

In what was a highly physical match, the Pioneers racked up 10 fouls and a yellow card, losing Sarah Howard and Jezza Hutto to injuries in the second half. Sara Klott was the first to take a shot for the Pios, one of two individual shots and eight scoring opportunities created in the first half. Klott, juniors Kennie Beighle and Becca McCullough, and senior Caroline Hennes each had two shots in the game.

Milan Davis started for the Pios, keeping the ball out of the net for the first half while the Pioneers dominated possession of the ball. Abby Prager tended goal for the second half and had two saves in the game, bringing her to four in the season so far.
