Pioneers yield to Lutes 2-0 after a fierce and scoreless first half

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers (3-3-1) played a fierce game Saturday afternoon against he Pacific Lutheran Lutes (5-1-1), ultimately losing the contest 2-0. The Lutes currently top the Northwest Conference standings with a 3-0 record, giving the Pios their first conference loss of the season.

The Pioneers played a strong defensive game, keeping the Lutes off the scoreboard and limiting their scoring opportunities to just four shots in the first half. Anna Saucedo and Kennie Beighle took two of the Pios' three shots in the first 15 minutes of play but couldn't find the back of the net. The Lutes scored their two goals early in the second half, just four minutes apart. Becca McCullough tried to answer for the Pios with a shot in minute 74, but the Pios were feeling the fatigue of a fast-paced and physical game and couldn't close the gap by the time the clock ran out.

Megan Sawyer tended goal for the Pios for 78 minutes of the match, allowing two goals and making two saves. Abbie Prager took over the position with 12 minutes left in the contest.
