Pios draw in season opener

Box Score

LISLE, Ill. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were on the road again for their second game of the season, heading east to take on the Benedictine Eagles. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, but did not go into overtime.

The Pios had an aggressive game offensively, outshooting the Eagles 10-3, with three shots on goal. Julia Markmann, Angelina Peterson and Anna Saucedo all had shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Anjali Kothari led the team in shots with two.

Head Coach Jim Tursi said of the game, "We were unlucky not to get a goal tonight but overall very pleased with the effort and the direction we are heading after two games. What has been the most positive about this team is how the freshman have played so far and have added to the dynamic of this year."

Key Moments

The Pioneers had a strong game offensively, starting the first half of the game with three shots in under twenty minutes. Kennie Beighle led the charge at 3:52 into the game with the Pios' first scoring opportunity. Beighle was followed by Courtney Schmidt, Sarah Howard and Sara Klott.

The second half of the game saw many freshmen get playing time, with the Pios' first shot on goal coming from a header from Julia Markmann at 55:41. Within five minutes of Markmann's shot, senior Anna Saucedo took another shot on goal, which was saved by Bendictine goalie Cassidy Henson. The Pios then had two more scoring opportunities within eight minutes as freshman Sofia Seirmarco headed a ball wide, and Angelina Peterson took a shot on goal that was again saved by Henson.

Anjali Kothari took the last two shots of the game for the Pios but sent one wide and the other into the crossbar.
