SALEM, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers outshot the Willamette Bearcats 15-7 and only allowed one shot on goal in regulation, but the Pios came out on the wrong side in a 2-1 overtime loss on Wednesday night at Sparks Field.

Aoi Sawanobori scored in the 97th minute to win the game for Willamette. Shelby Vaver had her first career goal with the Pioneers that evened the match in the 34th minute.

Willamette only produced three shots on goal, and Pioneers goalkeeper Megan Sawyer didn't have a save as the lone Bearcats shot that didn't score was stopped by a defensive save.

Lewis & Clark (3-5-1, 2-3-0 NWC) had five shots on goal for the fourth time this season and totaled 15 shots for the second time this year, but was limited to the single goal by Vaver. Julia Markmann and Caroline Hennes had a match-high three shots apiece.

"Anna got the ball and slid across the field," Vaver said of Anna Saucedo's assist. "I had the opportunity to turn on the defender and slotted it far post. It was a good, creative goal."

"Julia really fought," freshman defender Jezza Hutto said. "She gets to the end of balls that people don't expect and it is awesome to see how we can build off of her and her runs."

The Pioneers had numerous chances in the second half and took four shots in a span of about seven minutes. The closest of those was on a corner kick that Markmann had stopped by a defender on the near post. The ricochet went straight into the arms of Willamette goalkeeper Kristen Barclay, who made four saves in the game.

Willamette (5-3-1, 4-0-1 NWC) was kept to two shots in the opening half, but one went in. Emma Blackburn put an Annie Storm pass into the net during the 21st minute to open the game's scoring.
