Pioneers end weekend away with a 2-0 loss to Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A pair of goals in the first half of Saturday's game went unanswered by the Lewis & Clark Pioneers (4-7-1, 3-5-0 NWC) in a loss to the Whitworth Pirates (3-8-1, 2-5-1 NWC). Brixiada Mendoza snuck past Pioneers goalkeeper Megan Sawyer in the tenth minute of the game, putting the Pirates' first point on the board. Jadyn Baumgartner took two shots that went wide to the left before finally finding the net on her third try at 22:04. Both goals came off of assists from Hannah Miller. 

Sawyer tended goal for the first 45 minutes of play before Abbie Prager entered the game for the second half. Sawyer made three saves in addition to allowing two goals, while Prager made one save.

Key Moments

The Pirates controlled possession at the beginning of the game, outshooting the Pioneers 16-6 on the match. The Pirates managed 11 shots in the first half of play but the Pioneers defense limited them to five attempts in the second half.

Julia Markmann had three of the Pioneers 6 shots, one of which was saved by Isabelle Arends, the first half goalie for the Pirates. The Pioneers managed three shots on goal in the match, but none found their mark and it wasn't enough to close the gap before time ran out.

Shelby Vaver, Giana Losson and Anna Saucedo combined for the Pioneers' other three shots. Losson and Vaver came close to scoring but Kaycie Priske made the save each time.

Looking Ahead

As the Pios move into the second half of the Northwest Conference schedule, they start the weekend hosting George Fox at Griswold Stadium on Saturday and travel out to Forest Grove to take on Pacific on Sunday. Kickoff time for both days is scheduled for 12 p.m.
