Hennes scores her first goal of the year in defeat

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Caroline Hennes scored her first goal of the season to bring the Lewis & Clark Pioneers within one before losing 4-1 to the Corban Warriors on Thursday night at Griswold Stadium.

Hennes, who was Lewis & Clark's leading goal scorer last season, put her shot into the net in the 36th minute to bring the Pios to within 2-1. Corban's Annouscka Kordom scored consecutive goals six minutes apart to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute.

"It was just very singular defensive mistakes so I think those luckily will be easier to fix, but I thought we had some good possession," said Hennes, who led the Pios with seven shots in the game. "They're a great team and I think we did okay against them."

The Pioneers (1-1-1) came out firing, with Paige Barta and McKenzie Wingard missing high in the first two minutes. Corban gained possession and put out the next seven shots including Kordom's two goals.

Hennes' goal came on her own rebound, which followed a shot from Erin Lutz off Courtney Schmidt's pass that Corban starting goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (2-2-0) saved.

"Courtney did a great job winning it back in the midfield and I was there to pick it up," said Hennes about the goal. "We got it out wide and Erin made a great run, made a great initial shot, and I was just there to clean it up."

Overall, Corban led in shots, 18-15. Pioneers goalkeeper Megan Sawyer (0-1-1) started the game and saved four of the eight shots on goal against her. The loss is her first as a collegiate goalkeeper.

Kordom added a third goal in the second half before Emma Kosmala scored in the 58th minute for the other Corban (2-2-0) tallies.

The Pioneers had a good chance in the 77th minute when Hennes passed the ball into the six-yard box and Giana Losson got a piece of the ball in front of the net, but the shot missed high.

Lewis & Clark will host Oregon Tech on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. before beginning Northwest Conference play.
