NEWBERG, Ore. -- An 83rd-minute goal by George Fox's Emma Laurion ruined what was otherwise a complete performance by the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in a 1-0 defeat at the Austin Sports Complex on Wednesday night.

Laurion rebounded a missed first attempt and scored through a crowd in front of the net and Lewis & Clark starting goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson to score the game-winner.

"I was kind of in the middle there and tried to jump up and win the header. Hannah tried to get a hand on it. The ball kind of bounced in and Fox put it away," said senior captain Isobel Fikso. "It's really too bad because we hadn't played a complete 90 minutes, but tonight I thought we did. We just didn't get the result."

The Pioneers held an advantage in shots and corners, getting four of the latter in the second half of the Northwest Conference opener. Carla Thomas forced a save from the top of the box and Taylor Hudson had her shot from six feet out saved by Bruins goalkeeper Kelsey Kammerzell after the Laurion goal.

Those weren't the only missed chances for Lewis & Clark. In the first half, a right-side free kick by Ashley Cox missed off the crossbar in the 10th minute. Caroline Hennes, who had scored the Pios' last three goals coming into Wednesday's game, forced a save by starting George Fox goalie Morgan Bars. Hennes finished with a team-high three shots, one of which was on goal.

"It's disappointing to lose, but this was our most complete effort this season," said head coach Jim Tursi.

Lewis & Clark outshot George Fox, 10-4, in the second half. Osmundson played the whole game and saved the only other shot she faced on goal.

Freshman Lulu Adams took a career-high two shots and Sarah Howard was issued a yellow card in the second half for holding a George Fox player.

The Pioneers play at Linfield on Sunday and Pacific on Sept. 24 before returning to Portland for their NWC home opener on Sept. 25 against Pacific Lutheran.
