Lewis & Clark yields six goals in road defeat

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. -- Entering the weekend, Lewis & Clark freshman Caroline Hennes was tied for the Northwest Conference's lead in goals scored with two others. Pacific Lutheran's Machaela Graddy was one of them, and on Sunday afternoon, she scored three more against the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, as the Pios lost 6-0 at East Field.

Graddy scored 12 minutes into the game, one of a pair put in by the Lutes in the opening 45 minutes, and then added two more in the second half. The first goal was against starting Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson, who played 74 minutes, allowed five goals and made six saves. She was replaced by Emily Schmelling, who allowed one goal and had one save. Graddy scored again in the 60th and 64th minutes to give Pacific Lutheran a 5-0 lead.

Osmundson allowed five goals, a season-high. The six goals allowed by the Pioneers were the most they've allowed all year and the most given up by Lewis & Clark since allowing five at Linfield during the 2013 season. The scoring output is the highest of the season for Pacific Lutheran (12-0-4; 9-0-3 NWC) and continued a hot weekend for the Lutes, who scored four against Linfield on Saturday.

Lewis & Clark (5-10-1; 4-7-1 NWC) put six of its seven shot attempts in-frame, including Mackenzie Cornell-Maier's attempt three minutes after PLU scored its second goal of the game, a Hailey Smoot score off a corner kick, in the 26th minute. Sarah Howard's header in the 43rd minute was also saved by Lutes goalkeeper Takara Mitsui.

In the second half, the Pios were held without a shot until the 83rd minute. Lulu Adams, Terra Clarke, Alexa Hanson and Anna Saucedo all forced saves in the final seven minutes. Clarke, playing in her first NWC game and the fourth of her freshman season, took a 30-yard shot that hit the goal post. Hennes did not have a shot in the game.

Lewis & Clark's lengthy road stretch continues next weekend at Whitworth and Whitman. The Pioneers close out the season at Willamette on Nov. 5 and in Portland on Nov. 6 for Senior Day against Puget Sound.
