Second half scoring pushes Pios past Carleton to start season 2-0

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- After being denied three times to score in her second career game, Lewis & Clark freshman Ella Turkot registered her first goal on a follow-up to Anna Thorndike's 64th minute shot to help lead the Pioneers to a 2-1 win over the Carleton Knights at Griswold Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Turkot added to her strong second half with an assist 13 minutes later when junior Rochelle Jordan scored a left corner shot from the top of the 18-yard box to give the Pios a 2-0 lead with 13:09 to go in the match. The goal was Jordan's first this year.

About six minutes later, the Pioneers allowed their first goal of the season when Carleton junior Ava Lewis put a shot past Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Kelley Koeppen. Connor Kasch earned the assist.

There were no other shots for the remainder of the game.

"I think I finally got it down in terms of where to be when the crosses are going and who plays where and who shoots," said Turkot. "I finally got into the right spot at the right time for a rebound, and that meant a lot to me."

Lewis & Clark (2-0-0) outshot Carleton 12-8 overall, including an 8-5 advantage in the second half. The Pios kicked four corners while the Knights had two.

Freshman Sandra Alvarenga started the game at goal for Lewis & Clark working to a 0-0 tie at halftime on one save before Koeppen (2-0-0) played keeper the rest of the way, saving two shots.

Alvarenga was issued a yellow card in the sixth minute after she used her hands outside of the 18-yard box.

Kasch put a shot on goal in the 10th minute before sending a header over the net five minutes later, as Carleton (1-2-0) attacked early.

Turkot replaced starter Karley Pate at the 19:30 mark before Emily Thompson missed her second shot of the game for the Pioneers. Turkot's first of five shots in the game was wide off a Megan Ratfield corner with 16:30 remaining in the first half. Carleton goalkeeper Mikayla Coulombe saved Turkot's attempt 1:10 before halftime.

The Rochelle Jordan fan club was on-hand today - and Rochelle scored them a goal! Pios win 2-1 and are 2-0 this season.

In the second half, Ratfield missed a shot high in the 51st minute before Carleton's Megan King, a Corvallis, Ore. native, had a shot saved by Koeppen three minutes later.

Lewis & Clark's offense started picking up about the 63rd minute, when Turkot had her first attempt of the second half stopped by Coulombe before she scored on the Thorndike rebound a minute later.

From that point on, the Pioneers outshot Carleton 4-2. Coulombe (1-2-0) stopped five of seven shots against her.

As a first-year student-athlete, Turkot has been impressed by the fans at the first two games of the season.

"Everyone is so nice and welcoming that it feels like I have been here longer than I have been," she said. "It's like I have a whole new family of people. Being on a team, having a fan base come out and support you, it already feels like you mean something to the community."

Thompson finished the game with three shots, one on goal. Hanna Ball played 11 minutes and had a shot. Lewis and Kasch had a team-high two shots each, followed by a shot apiece from King, Hailey Mair and Caroline Sheffield.

The Pioneers will play the next four matches away from Portland starting Saturday when Dallas hosts Lewis & Clark at 3 p.m. Pacific.
