Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Playing in her final game, Anna Thorndike scored a goal in the 74th minute, and her third of the weekend, to even Lewis & Clark's game with Whitman before the home team Missionaries won the match 2-1 on a 90th minute score Sunday afternoon at the Whitman College Athletic Complex.
Thorndike's goal followed a tally by Whitman's Chelsea Day 15 seconds earlier that gave the Missionaries a momentary 1-0 lead. Seconds before regulation ended, Whitman senior Brianna Brown sent a free kick into the left side of the Pios' net, giving Whitman a 2-1 victory on its Senior Day.
Combined with Linfield's win on Sunday, Lewis & Clark finishes in fifth place in the Northwest Conference, clearing Whitman (3-11-6; 3-7-6) for the spot by seven points. It's the fourth consecutive year the Pios have finished fifth or better in the NWC after ending the 2011 season in last place with a record of 2-13-1. That season was the second under current head coach Jim Tursi.
The Pioneers were outshot in the rainy match 20-8, as Whitman held a six-shot advantage in both halves. Lewis & Clark only took one try in the first half, Emily Thompson's shot in the 23rd minute that forced a save, and only two in the final 25 minutes of the match.
Thompson took a team-high four shots, all of which were on-goal against Whitman goalkeeper Haley Case. Thorndike's goal was her only shot of the match, as the Pios had all but two of their shots in-frame. Freshman Tasha Addington-Ferris (pictured below right) assisted the Lewis & Clark goal, the first point of her collegiate career.
Lewis & Clark (11-8-1; 7-8-1 NWC) attacked the net in the 83rd minute when Rochelle Jordan nearly scored before Case kept it from crossing the line. Kylie Carera missed high in the next minute, the final shot of the match for the Pios.
Along with Thompson, Thorndike and Carera, seniors Sarah Schoville, Karley Pate, Taylor Hudson, Megan Ratfield and Hannah Stoddard played their last match for the Pios on Sunday.
Brown's goal was her second of the season, while Day's was her first this year. Combined, the two accounted for eight of the Missionaries' 12 shots on-goal.
Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Sandra Alvarenga saved 10 of the 12 shots she faced, losing for just the third time this season. She faced a barrage of headers toward the middle of the first half, saving attempts by Brown twice in the 26th minute and once more in the 27th minute, all off corner kicks. Along with an attempt by Alissa Soo, Whitman sent in four shots over a 38-second span.
Isobel Fikso was issued the match's only yellow card.
Last season, Thompson, Fikso and Carera were chosen All-Northwest Conference. This year's selections are expected this week.
